About 30 seconds ago I discovered The Artful Desperado. The writer uses dude and fart with complete comfort when describing art or the range of expressions about art. I appreciate that level of comfort.  Here’s a few selections from the Artful Desperado: Serious OCD in these playful assemblages from Carl Kleiner.

Friday Follies-Palm Tree Obsession

Yes – I admit…I have a slight obsession with this tall lovely tree that makes me think of summer which is probably why I love this tree so much. I mean – do you ever think of winter when you see a palm tree? No – and if you do…I find it disturbing. Ok  – so I took a bucketload of palm images in Palm Springs and I decided to post a few on Etsy and then of course it evolved into a pinboard on Pinterest of more palms but that’s for another day. At any rate…here is one set of palms that are offered as small prints.

Then I took some photos of mid-century modern homes and a truly awesome visitors center that had its humble beginnings as a gas station. Gawd but those desert people are good!

…and this one was taken with a regular camera on the iPhone 4s and then I dropped into the Tilt feature that blurred out all but a small piece of my choosing.

 It would only be right to complete today’s post with photographs– so lucky me I somehow landed on the compelling, totally original and somewhat humorous page called, Dear Photograph. Photographers and amateurs have submitted old photos shot in front of the current and same location as the photo and matched it up so that it feels like the photo is on the same plane– if that makes sense. OK–you will just have to see for yourself.

Well – today is indeed a lucky day. I discovered a Tumblr site called Bookshelf Porn. I LOVE books! ***Have a great day. Think of a non-resolution you could do for 2012. I’m thinking…don’t eat shellfish. Or olives.  And for that matter, mushrooms.

Auld Lang Syne

Wow – my last post for 2011! It’s been a great year and I’m not just saying this. I think the art world in general has done well and most artists I know personally have had a good year too. Perhaps there has been a rebirth in the art world – a new appreciation for culture if you will.

I have met so many new artists, posted about emerging and experienced and opened my world to new mediums and new looks. My goal in never basking in mediocrity continues. Mediocrity kills the soul – we must never aspire for that. And on that note I give you anything but mediocrity. Enjoy.

I love California – living here with all its beautiful spaces like sun and sand, snow and valleys, vineyards and forests. So this piece, A Day in California,  from Ryan and Sheri Killackey (via Honestly WTF) is visually stunning.  It includes 10,000 photographs of our lovely state composed into a time lapse photography exhibit.

Lastly – the lyrics to Auld Land Syne. I don’t really get them but I don’t care – it’s what you sing on New Years and that ‘s just the way it is.

Should old acquaintance be forgot,
and never brought to mind ?
Should old acquaintance be forgot,
and old lang syne ?

CHORUS:
For auld lang syne, my dear,
for auld lang syne,
we’ll take a cup of kindness yet,
for auld lang syne.
And surely you’ll buy your pint cup !
and surely I’ll buy mine !
And we’ll take a cup o’ kindness yet,
for auld lang syne.

CHORUS
We two have run about the slopes,
and picked the daisies fine ;
But we’ve wandered many a weary foot,
since auld lang syne.

CHORUS
We two have paddled in the stream,
from morning sun till dine† ;
But seas between us broad have roared
since auld lang syne.

The Week Between

Welcome to the last week of December and welcome also to the new year just around the corner. What are your plans? Changes? New directions? I’m thinking good thoughts for 2012 and even though I prefer odd numbered years I won’t let that get in the way.

Here’s a link to teaching your child to draw from an Etsy blog post. I was fortunate to have parents who always encouraged me to draw and supplied with the necessary tools to feed my love of art. While it would be wishful thinking to expect all parents to encourage an artistic direction when it becomes evident I would hope most would because we simply need more artists in this world. It’s that simple.

Almost Winter Solstice Tuesday

I’m always a little ambivalent about the two Solstice days of the year. One is the longest day of the year and welcomes summer but the days are also getting shorter while the other welcomes three long months of winter but the days are also getting longer. It’s a conundrum I know.
